Sewing Circle
The Edmunton Needlework Guild in Alberta, Canada is preparing for their annual provincial needlecraft workshop called Fibre Potpourri (we spell it "fiber" here in the US). It will be held from Friday May 29 through Sunday May 31, 2009. They're expecting over one hundred participants from various provinces to attend so they can exchange ideas and learn new stitching techniques. It's a little to far away for me, but I still like to hear what other stitchers are doing. If you go, please take some photos of the event and share them with us! To register, use this form which is a .pdf file. Even if you can't attend, take a look at the photos and workshops listed. Wow!

To the Point
Since today is Mother's Day, you are probably remembering the times you have given or received special handmade presents. Handmade gifts make special events even more special. They are designed to be treasured.

If you want to create a stitched heirloom to commemorate a wedding, graduation, or new baby, my advice is to tell the person you're making it for and let them have some input about the colors and symbols. You are still giving them the gift of your time and thought. You can still surprise them by not revealing the finished piece until the big day. But if you ask them what colors and symbols they want, they are more likely to actually use and display your hard work!

Words of Wisdom
"The most precious thing one can make is a friend." ~ Daisy Sour Cream wrapper

Find of the Month
Since I've been talking about extra special stitched gifts, here's an easy pattern for how to make one. It's a monogrammed handkerchief pattern from the Martha Stewart website. Monogrammed handkerchiefs are a classic gift, especially for a bride with new initials. This pattern says to use the chain stitch, but other crewel stitches such as the backstitch would look nice, too.

You're Invited: Please share your stitching stories, ideas, words of wisdom, find of the month, or questions. Just reply to this newsletter and tell me what you think! I'd love to hear from you.

The most interesting feedback will be shared in next month's issue!

Happy Stitching,
Amy Conaway
