Sewing Circle
It's almost time! The International Embroidery Conference will take place August 28-30, 2008 at The Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Even though they were started in 1994, this will be only the 4th international conference. This year's theme is "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow". Attendees will enjoy a dessert reception, two continental breakfasts, a sit down lunch, an optional cruise on the Ohio River, plus respected speakers and a special exhibit at Embroidery Museum and Resource Center (EGA headquarters). The Embroiderers' Guild of America will continue the party by holding a 50th Golden Gala from August 31 to September 5, 2008.

Everyone is invited to celebrate National Stitch in Public Day on September 3, 2008. The Embroiderers' Guild is encouraging all stitchers to get out, show, and share their talents in a public way that will encourage community among stitchers and pride in our craft.

To the Point
One of my favorite types of embroidery to show people new to stitching is huck embroidery. Older people remember doing it in home economics class. I've even encountered one man who did it as a hobby while at sea in the Coast Guard. Huck embroidery (also known as Swedish weaving) is different from other types because the thread never goes through the fabric; there is no mess on the wrong side. The stitches are very easy. A towel is a quick project to give this technique a try, and it makes an excellent (and useful) gift! My ALC Unlimited store now offers some towels already hemmed or you can buy a 10 yard bolt.

Words of Wisdom
"More things grow in the garden than the gardener sows." (Spanish proverb)

Find of the Month
After enjoying time in the garden with fresh, homegrown vegetables and colorful flowers, I was looking for something fresh and colorful to stitch as I watch the Olympic Games. I found a Summer Garden needlepoint pattern. It makes a little ornament with basic stitches, so it should be quick and easy to finish. I love the variegated Watercolours threads! They're a smooth cotton thread made by Caron.

You're Invited: Please share your stitching stories, ideas, words of wisdom, find of the month, or questions. Just reply to this newsletter and tell me what you think! I'd love to hear from you.

The most interesting feedback will be shared in next month's issue!

Happy Stitching,
Amy Conaway
