Create a Handmade Cross Stitch Bookmark
For a quick, easy project to use up leftover scraps of floss and fabric, make a cross stitch bookmark. You can experiment with new designs, and you'll have a unique handmade gift.
- Start by finishing the fabric edges by sewing or serging. To make fringe, leave raw fabric exposed, but you should still have a line of stitching about an inch in to make sure it doesn't fray too far.
- Don't use a hoop or frame to make a bookmark. It's too much bother for something so small.
- Stitch whatever you want! Experiment. Let your imagination run wild. Perhaps you will want to try embellishing with another embroidery method such as Hardanger or Swedish huck weaving.
- To add a tassel, make a loop around with #5 perle cotton or 6 strand floss that has been twisted back on itself. Fray the knot at the end for a tasseled edge.
Bookmarks can be treasured and useful! For other quick projects that make great gifts, try stitching a
cross stitch bookmark greeting card
or an ornament.
