Needlework Display Tips

These display tips will keep your embroidery showcase looking its best with a little common sense and awareness. Textile preservation and heirloom care are always important regardless of age.

Ideal Needlework Display

Out of Direct Sunlight
Fibers will discolor from direct sunlight, from very bright indirect sunlight, or even from fluorescent lighting. Be careful to observe the display spot throughout the day and year. The sun moves lower in winter and climbs higher on the wall.
Correct Humidity
The Textile Museum tips recommend 50 to 55% as an ideal relative humidity for storing fabric. Too much moisture can encourage the growth of molds and mildews. Dry air can make fibers brittle.
Do Not Pull and Strain
Tacking a cloth at the top will cause gravity to pull the fabric out of shape over time. If you want to hang a tapestry, use a rod to support the weight evenly across the top.

Framing needlework is also a wonderful idea, especially for small, delicate work, or something special you hope to preserve for many years.

It's also a good idea to start a rotation of your works. Change which pieces are out on display every few months. This slows the aging process and allows you to show everything without running out of space –- one of the most useful tips I ever learned!
