Embroidered Handkerchief

by Flora
(Chennai, India)

Flower patterns are always my favorite for crewel embroidery, be it a single flower or a bunch of flowers. I got this flower pattern from the book Embrodiery Designs by Nirmala C. Mistry. This book has many lovely patterns.

I came across this pattern when I was searching for a flower pattern suitable for long and short stitch to be hand embroidered on a handkerchief after I learnt the long and short embroidery techniques from the book Long and Short Stitch Embroidery by Trish Burr.

I have used Anchor threads for this project. Thread colors are my own choice. Follow this link to my blog where you could see the progress of this project.

The stitches used here are: long and short stitch, satin stitch, french knot stitch, split stitch, and stem stitch.

For Smoothness of Satin Stitch
by: Anonymous

Hi Brenda,

I use a single strand of thread for satin and long-and-short stitches instead of two strands. This gives a smooth look to the embroidery. Also your stitches should be as close as possible. There shouldn't be any gap in between two stitches. Hope it's clear for you.

Thanks,
Flora

I love it! How do you make your satin stitches so smooth?
