Finishing Needlepoint Canvas Stocking

by Janice
(Colorado)

I need to finish this canvas needlepoint stocking. Wording, ruffle, and trees are beads. How do I cut a piece of velvet for the backing BEFORE I cut the canvas? How do I line it? Do I stitch the edgeing to fill-in any spots that does not follow the bend of the sock? (I do not want white canvas to show - backing is navy blue velvet). Do I do a couple of continental stitches then machine sew the edges? I want the TOP opened. HELP!!!!!!

Amy's Answer
That's so cute, Janice! To add the backing and lining, use the same steps used for a cross stitch stocking EXCEPT you use the stocking you stitched as the outline for the final shape. Put the layers together, right sides facing each other inside. No need to baste. You can sew from the back of the canvas so that you see the stocking outline. Hand stitch it and hit each canvas hole of the outline so no white canvas should be showing at the end. You can still machine stitch the stocking liner if that's easier, but I would hand stitch to go around the baby Christmas stocking outline.

Good luck, and please let us know how it turns out!

Christmas Stockings
by: Sharon

I made stockings for our grandchildren. I used felt behind the aida cloth/canvas, stitching all the way around it (right side out). I sewed it on my machine, put the felt to hang up between the felt back and cloth at the top of the stocking. Then I sewed it wrong side out with another piece of felt attached to the rest of the stocking, using my sewing machine. Then I turned it right side out and ironed it.

I hope this helps you and makes sense. Good luck!

I'm a little clearer on the process, but NOT comfortable enough, as yet. Thank you for your help, Amy! I'll make sure I submit a pic after the completion!
