Identifying the Style and Origin of an Embroidery

by Marlin
(Louisiana)

A friend asked me for assistance in identying what style of embroidery this is, as well as it's origin. Any information at all would be helpful...

Amy's Answer
It's beautiful! I'm not an appraiser or historian, so I'm not really sure. Is it embroidered? It looks like a painting. I do remember seeing an item on the PBS Antiques Roadshow that was embroidered silk that combined background painting with some silk embroidery on top.

You might be able to date it by examining the dyes closely. The blue is very strong. Modern blues don't last long. The old indigo did, but I thought that was always a darker blue. Is the mountain faded or was it supposed to be that way?

You might also try a history book on ships to get an idea of when that style was invented.

Sometimes you ask questions and end up with more questions!
