Religious Embroidery and Goldwork

by Ruth O'Leary
(England)

Goldwork is my specialty. My favourite embroidery book? I think that has to be Embroidery in Religion and Ceremonial by Beryl Dean. This is essential for anyone working on or interested in ecclesiastical embroidery, covering not only its history and use, but also the mechanics of how to make the items she discusses, many of which, such as hangings or book covers, can be used in other contexts too. Invaluable!

As a keen goldworker, I wouldn't want to be without Metal Thread Embroidery by Jane Lemon or Metal Thread Embroidery (same title, different book!) by Barbara Dawson. I've learned so much from both of them. For a fresh take, I can also highly recommend New Ideas in Goldwork by Tracy A. Franklin. (Disclaimer: I know Tracy, but it's still a great book!)
