Sit on Scroll Frame

by Susan

My sit on scroll frame is wide enough for a 16" canvas. Are dowls interchangeable? I don't know if I can use 20" or 24" dowls with this sit on frame. I don't live near a store where I can buy the split dowls and I don't want to waste time ordering then sending back. Thanks.

Depending on the type of embroidery frame you have, you might be able to make it wider with longer dowl rods. Some are specially made to be adjustable sizes such as this Multiple Size Cross Stitch Scroll Frame Set. Can the rods be slid out and replaced without affecting any tension mechanics? If so, you can try longer dowels, but make sure they are the same circumference as what you are taking out. You might need to do a little hand sanding if they're too tight. Use a fine grade of samdpaper so it stays nice and smooth so as not to snag the fabric.

A problem with longer dowls can be instability, depending on how the embroidery frame is built. If it becomes too heavy on one side to stand up, you'll have to clamp the base to a table.

by: lindagail

I have been using 18 inch dowels in my scroll frame for several years. It works just fine.
